Shelley Staples is Associate Professor of English and Second Language Acquisition and Teaching at the University of Arizona. She has been a pronunciation teacher, course developer, and teacher trainer for over 15 years. Her research focuses on corpus linguistics and language teaching, with an emphasis on pronunciation research and instruction. She is particularly interested in applications to English for Specific Purposes. Her book, The Discourse of Nurse-Patient Interactions, a corpus-based analysis of health care interactions, includes a comparison of prosodic features of International and U.S. nurses in their interactions with patients. This research has been applied to Pronunciation for Nurses, a course she hopes to eventually make available online.
